“If you are good at drawing, you must join Architecture”: A popular myth.

The blog clears the popular myths about the journey of architecture that is popularly assumed to be something equivalent to ‘drawing’ as a hobby with excellent sketching skills.

Are you opting for Architecture or suggesting someone on the basis of good drawing skills? Then here is what you should know...

“Architecture is really about well-being. I think that people want to feel good in a space… On the one hand it’s about shelter, but it’s also about pleasure.” – Zaha Hadid

In my daily conversation, as I meet people, the very common question that bumps into is “So you are an architect, you must be good at drawing”. “I am suggesting my child to pursue architecture because he loves drawing.” And so on. This triggered me to write a blog on popular collective notion about architecture being ‘well paid off career’, ‘glorified’, ‘fashionable’, ‘trendy’ and most surprisingly ‘good at Art & drawing’. Drawing on semi-structured, in-depth interviews examining careers choices in detail from what made them choose the profession culminated into these common findings:

Why many choose architecture:

1. Basic instinct of doing something out of the box.

2. Sounds silly but … “being drifting around castles when I was a child, playing with Lego”

3. “What are you good at and I said Art and Geography. Art, you can be a commercial artist, art teacher or an architect”. Art teacher, an Architect and a commercial artist? And…not much choice really, I think I’ll be an architect!”

4. “I think Architecture doesn’t include Mathematics and physics that wreck the brain out of me.”

5. “Wanted to study fashion design, mom didn’t approve so here we are…..”

Here are also come visuals drawn by Leewerdist describing the journey and fate of architecture students in choosing the career. These visual are an amusing way of expressing the dilemma of architecture students.

As one ventures out of traumatic secondary and higher education journey one decides to choose their career. At this stage there are many councilors and institutions which help individuals to pursue architecture based on interests seen in arts & creativity. But there is lot beyond arts & creativity. Self-learning qualities and the environment in which individual grows and brings up the idea of being an architect can be self-examined. They must possess:

Want to be an Architect? Do you possess all of these qualities? (Source: Author)

Every process should be understood from its input - output approach understanding what is been invested and what can be it's rewards and effects. Having understood the qualities one must possess in choosing architecture as a career, it is now important to decipher the reward one achieves being an Architect. The dilemma of many architects and their relationship with parents is faced with disconcerting and shaking opinions. Many times, parents expect their children as ‘Architects’ to outperform and become creative in the production of work that maintains a societal status of earning high, but on the other hand, they are unsuccessful in presenting a clear guidance on how the chosen career may channelize their efforts to achieve a better quality living, a happy workflow and sensitive outlook anywhere in the world. Here are some qualities of architect which in my opinion expresses the field of architecture in totality.

1. Self-inventor: Architecture evolves an individual into completely different human being. One explores the core interest of what they like to do and what makes them keep going in positive workflow. Many architects connect principles of architecture with music rhythm. Many famous architects are also good dancers, musicians, painters, sculptures, gardeners, etc. I myself connect architecture to spirituality where the passion and skills gained from architectural fraternity could help in serving humanity as a whole.

2. A plethora of information on human endeavor, including Art, History, Material Science, Physics, Engineering.

3. Finds New Talent and becomes a specialist in almost everything: Each new project is a window for inquiry into new profession may it be a law office, a medical facility, technology, theories of organization, or methods of construction. To articulate further it becomes a part of inherent efficiency to quickly grasp and co-ordinate with experts of varied fields about a knowledge that needs to be included in any new projects. Knowing something about everything becomes the motto.

4. Able to unleash their creativity: There is no limit post Architecture. One can extend their interest and talent in arts, films, journalism, city planning, lectureships, photography, set designing, etc.

5. A hands-on approach: As a part of architectural curriculum one learns the art of model – making. Such hands-on experience helps an individual to make careful mistakes by trial and error methods. Hands-on approach also helps in effective communication between the improving the design quality and client satisfaction and visualization which almost becomes impossible.

6. Communication and understanding design problem: For some Architects, there will be a set of buildings that they simply find ‘beautiful’, but in the professional practice “beautiful” may not be a qualifying parameter that will convince clients and colleagues. Hence defending through architectural vocabulary trains an architect to be well versed without being rhetoric in decoding the clients’ ambition into real time projects.

7. Knowing the everyday life complexities and problems in urban transformations. One starts reading a city through the cultural and architectural values which develops a sensitive outlook in creating identity of the place. The urban issues like the shift from public transport to the private vehicle, heavy costs on environment and ecology, rapid urbanizations and haphazard developments all become a part of Architect’s life as a human being. In the modern digital era, computer become powerful tool in architectural design practice. With the development of Web and widespread use of internet, computer has taken a significant role as new medium in design communication context for information processing, interactive visualization and communication.

Lastly, Architecture is not just a profession but also social volunteering, preserving historic, architectural, and community practices and values, hence becoming a social profession. I am hoping that those reading this blog and opting for architecture as mere ‘art and drawing’ skills to consciously think and pursue it as a social responsibility in making our cities livable, healthy, and safer.
